“Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” Many of us recall this phrase from a commercial scene of an elderly person falling and pushing a security button that alarms someone to call for help. Sometimes, we even joke about it when we need help up off the floor or actually fall ourselves. The truth is falling and safety in general are not a joking matter and it can happen to any of us.
Here are some simple safety suggestions that CAREjourney has found helpful:
- Look for and remove general tripping hazards such throw rugs and extension cords. If you must use cords, move them against the wall or under the carpet so they are not in the flow of walking traffic.
- Make sure all paths are clear of clutter and furniture. Sometimes, the end of a table may be sticking out into the general walking path in the home. Or, a stack of magazines and books or toys may be in the way. It is important to have a clear path to walk from room to room.
- Install safety grab bars in the bathroom. In order for the bars to be secure, they need to be properly bolted to wall studs.
- Use nightlights in the hallways, walk paths, and staircases. Illuminating these areas will provide light and more security as someone moves about the house.
- Confirm security and locks in the home. Make sure all exterior doors and windows locked and stayed lock unless in use.
- Use peep holes. If you do not have a peep hole on the exterior doors, you can purchase one for easy installation at a home improvement store.
- Add a security alarm or alert system if you or your loved one is a fall risk or lives alone. Some people may put their foot down and refuse such a solution. However, these systems are proven and have saved many people.
