Going to the doctor can be quite stressful. But when you are taking your parents to the doctor, the stress factor is off the charts! As with other aspects of caring for your parents, going to the doctor can take on its on dynamic. In order to alleviate some of the stress, here are a few helpful hints.
- Make a prioritized list of questions. Get input from your parent(s) and siblings(s) if applicable.
- Be prepared to take notes during the appointment. Even if the information may not be significant at the time, you may find it helpful in the future.
- Bring a list of prescription and over the counter medications your parent is taking. Be sure to including vitamins and supplements. Include the name, dosage, and schedule.
- When the doctor asks a question, allow your parent to answer, unless specified otherwise. If you are speaking, be sure to talk to the doctor and your parent.
- Your parent’s privacy is important to her independence. Be sure to respect it and leave the room when necessary.
